Description

The Arunima mango is a premium, hybrid variety developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi. It is a cross between the popular Indian varieties ‘Amrapali’ and ‘Sensation’. Arunima is prized for its exquisite taste, stunning appearance, and off-season availability. It is also known by the name ‘Pusa Arunima’ in some agricultural contexts.

Detailed Description:

  • Size:
The Arunima mango tree is known for its compact growth habit. It stays relatively small and bears fruit at a short height, making it suitable for high-density plantations and smaller gardens where space is limited. One of its key advantages is that it does not suffer from the problem of alternate bearing (producing fruit only every other year); it is a regular and consistent bearer that produces fruit annually.

  • Leaves:
The leaves are typical of the Mangifera indica species — evergreen, simple, and lanceolate in shape with a leathery texture.

  • Flowers:
Arunima produces small, greenish-yellow flowers in panicles. Its notable flowering characteristic is that it is an early-blooming variety, which contributes to its later harvest period.

  • Fruit:
The fruit of the Arunima mango is truly distinctive and has several premium qualities:

    • Appearance: The fruit is medium to large in size, weighing 250–350 grams on average, though some fruits can weigh as much as 500 grams to 1 kilogram. Its skin is smooth and develops a striking deep red or crimson blush over a yellow-green base when ripe, often described as the colour of the rising sun.

    • Flesh: The flesh is fibreless, rich, and deep orange-yellow in colour, with a very small stone (seed) which means more edible pulp.

    • Taste and Sweetness: Arunima is celebrated for its exceptionally sweet flavour, often compared to sugar or honey, and it has a pleasant aroma. It is also noted for having lower acidity than many other varieties.

    • Nutritional Value: The fruit is notably rich in Vitamin C, with scientific studies recording high levels of ascorbic acid.

  • Branchlets:
These are characteristic of the species, forming a dense, compact canopy due to the tree’s spreading growth habit.

  • Bark:
The bark is typical of the mango species, being greyish-brown and fissured.

Other Notable Features:

  • Superior Fruit Quality: Studies have recorded a very high Total Soluble Solids (TSS) content (around 22-24 °Brix) and total sugar content (over 18%), contributing to its exceptional sweetness. It also has a high pulp weight (over 240g per fruit in some studies), making it a very satisfying eating experience.

  • Late and Off-Season Variety: Arunima is a late-maturing mango variety. Its harvest season is in August to September, a time when most other mango varieties have finished their season. This off-season availability creates a high market demand and allows it to command a premium price.

  • High Market Value: Because of its late-season arrival, stunning appearance, and superior taste, Arunima mangoes sell for a significantly higher price than standard varieties. Reports indicate prices ranging from ₹300 to ₹1,000 per kilogram in Indian markets.

Climate Suitability for Nepal:

The Arunima mango is an excellent choice for cultivation in Nepal.

  • Ideal Regions: It has been successfully cultivated in the neighbouring Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, which share a similar climate to Nepal’s Terai region. This suggests it will adapt well to the warm, humid conditions of the Terai and similar subtropical zones.

  • Growing Conditions: Like all mangoes, it requires a warm climate, well-drained soil, and a distinct dry period for best fruit production. The variety is also known to be adaptable to various soil types.

Why Choose Arunima from Gupta Nursery:

  • Guaranteed Authenticity: We provide genuine, high-quality grafted Arunima plants, ensuring you get the true variety with all its premium characteristics.

  • Early and Consistent Fruiting: Grafted plants begin bearing fruit early and produce a reliable crop every year.

  • Exceptional Market Value: The late-season availability and premium quality of the fruit ensure a high return on investment for commercial growers.

  • Compact and Manageable Tree: Its smaller stature makes it easier to manage and suitable for both commercial orchards and home gardens.

Cultivation Tips for Nepal:

  • Climate: Performs best in tropical to subtropical climates. Avoid regions with heavy frost.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained loamy soil but is adaptable to a range of soil types.

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun exposure for optimum growth and fruiting.

At Gupta Nursery, we are proud to offer genuine Arunima mango plants—a scientifically developed variety that combines stunning beauty, exceptional sweetness, and late-season profitability, making it a prized addition to any orchard or garden in Nepal.
